Spider Multiplication War

Spider Math was inspired from a math workshop I attended where they used ants to teach some math concepts after reading The Ants Go Marching One by One. I utilized spiders and further developed a Multidisciplinary approach to teaching many math concepts. Additionally, we tied this into life cycles, habitats, comparing and contrasting arachnids and insects, and report writing about different spiders. During this unit, I always read Charlotte's Web by E.B. White to the class.

If you copy these onto stiff card stock or laminate these, they can be cut apart to play Spider Multiplication War. Not only does it help the students learn their multiplication facts, because they have to give the correct answer if they have 4x7=, but they have a visual to count the spiders to help them still be success if they don't remember the answer. In addition to this, the Spider Multiplication War allows the you to reinforce the concepts of Greater Than, Less Than, and Equal To. The game can be played in pairs or in groups and is played like regular War, but each person has to give the multiplication fact and answer when they turn over their card.
